Random groups of Yahoo! users were surprised last fall when they were involuntarily ‘upgraded’ to one of several beta versions of Yahoo!’s new home page.

A resounding majority of ‘testers’ gave the new designs a thumbs-down. Among their complaints: It took too many mouse clicks to get to their mailboxes and the new layout was frustratingly confusing.

So, Yahoo! is going back to the drawing board, Burke Culligan, Senior Director Product Management for Yahoo front doors, told reporters earlier this week.

“We’ve rethought the flow and design based on feedback we’ve gotten from users. I think users will … feel much better about it,” Culligan said.

One of the most important things Yahoo! designers learned from last fall’s beta testing was that ahuge majority of Yahoo! users drop in to their Yahoo! accounts several times eveyy day to check their mail and see what’s new.

As a result, the next incarnation of the new Yahoo! home page will be based on a new ‘quick in, quick out’ philosphy.

One reason Yahoo! wanted to design its home page in the first place was to make it easier for users to customize their page and install the new applications yahoo! is developing to compete with the Google and other challengers from the social networking sectoir suxh as Facebook.

This is my solution to avoid the horrible home page: even after Adblocking most of the images, I hate being forced to view Yahoo’s choice of prurient news headlines.
    1) before logging out of Yahoo, open a blank tab in browser window
    2) go back to Yahoo, click “sign out” and…
    3) immediately click on blank tab.
    4) enjoy a nice empty page, or browse to another site, while Yahoo logs you out and loads all that unwanted trash (on the page that is hidden behind the one you’re viewing!)
    5)close the Yahoo tab.
    6) I have also bookmarked the email login page so that I do not have to see the home page before logging in. Dear Yahoo; if I -wanted- headlines from the Daily Mail rammed down my throat, I’d go and sit in the local Conservative Club!
    Hope this help others.

I hate the new look. I hate that they have changed my mail and now they have screwed up my home page. I have no idea how to change it back. I have surfed for answers and suggestions but NOTHING has worked. I guess it’s time to get cozy with GMail and stop living in the past with yahoo.

There was nothing wrong with the previous version. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.
